The saga of voting in America continues. Blue states went back to the Supreme Court to argue that interference from the Post Office before the mid-terms, with respect to mail-in ballots, would be detrimental to the voting process. All but two on the court concurred. The two being Alito and Thomas. Brett Kavanaugh, although voting with the majority, threw a curve ball with his vote. These are his words for his application for stay: “In my view, based on the briefing the court has received at this interim stage, there is at least a fair prospect that the final rule falls within the Postal Service’s statutory authority.” I will paraphrase his next words: State and local election officials do not have sufficient time to reasonably implement the rule before the elections — the key words being “before the elections.”
This trainwreck has been stopped on the tracks for now but it is headed right for the heart of America and our democracy in the very near future. We still have Barrett, Gorsuch and the Chief Justice to side with the three liberal justices, but I have no trust in the Conservatives to go against Trump too many times.
Along with the post office being entrusted with our votes, we also have federal agents meddling in the voter rolls to pull out non-citizens. Non-citizens can’t vote but immigrants are Trump’s go-to distraction.
The President is sowing seeds of doubt, and it seems as if some people are starting to eat the fruit from some of those seeds. He has been talking about this since 2020 and he does not stop.
A few things are being done to further rip apart our democracy with regard to voting:
• Even though it is against the law, some states may see Federal Agents at their polling places. They want to scare people into not voting.
• FEMA is pushing states to change the way they conduct elections or said states may lose millions in federal terrorism-prevention funds (What states and what elections are not being conducted properly?)
• The election security infrastructure has been decimated by Trump.
People in positions of authority are 2020 election deniers.
The United States Postal Service has functioned poorly for decades, and I prefer that they never touch an envelope that contains a ballot because they are not to be trusted. I do not castigate the mail carriers and the people that work for the USPS. It is the people in the highest positions that will do what Trump wants, and the rule of law be damned.
Is our democracy going to tumble because Trump lost the 2020 election? Nicole Wallace of MS Now said, “In years to come people will ask: Why did no one ever stop Trump?” I’ve been asking myself that question for a long time.
Vote. Vote early if you can. If you vote by mail, put your ballot in a voting box and do not mail it at the post office. America was built a certain way. It is either going to stay that way or not. The way it was built is good, but not perfect. But the erosion has already started. Only we can stop it. I just hope we have the fortitude.
