Dear Tamara, We’re both professional in our respective fields. My wife works for the University and I’m a Senior Partner in a Law Firm. With our combined income we finally found our dream house. Obviously it rests in a gated HOA on one of the country clubs in our city. We both work long hours and normally we don’t see our neighbors with our busy schedules during the week.

A symbol of pride and belonging becomes a neighborhood flashpoint in this month’s Dear Tamara.
With pride actually approaching we decided to put out our pride flag. To celebrate this month of pride. I was out watering some new plants that we had planted. When I noticed that a couple neighbors were gathered up and talking as they kept looking my way. I thought it was quite odd when two of them approached me. I turned and greeted them as they walked to the sidewalk and stopped. They were quite upset with the pride flag and wanted me to remove it. Saying that this was unacceptable and would require parents to explain to their children what it represented. They went on to say that this was a gated community and such is unacceptable and against HOA policies. This was a demand to remove or they would report us for violating HOA policies. Any suggestions on how we can approach these misinformed neighbors?
Lauren and Marie – Humble TX
Dear Lauren & Marie, I believe these situations will often arise in any neighborhood but maybe more so in gated communities . The best approach ,is to stay calm and polite. Attempt to discuss with the neighbor that it doesn’t violate any policies. That you’ve researched the bylaws and there was no violation with us displaying this flag. Be firm and state that neither yourself or your wife would remove it. But most of all, the flag doesn’t impact anyone on a personal level. It’s merely a flag that represents the LGBTQIA+ that me and my wife are a part of. That this flag is unlike the neighbor on the corner that displays Trump 2024.Vote Republican, Make America Great Again. It’s at least a community flag that’s worthy of displaying.
Best of luck,keep us posted.
Tamara
