Some people were born to be on stage and no matter what life throws at them, the spotlights keep calling. In 1959. Judy Garland, often referred to as the world’s greatest entertainer, was diagnosed with hepatitis.

She was hospitalized after experiencing symptoms of hepatitis, including jaundice, fatigue, and nausea. Doctors told her that her performing days were over, that she likely had five years or less to live, and that even if she did survive she would be a semi-invalid and would never sing again.

Over the next ten years, Garland would star in four films, receiving an Oscar nomination for Judgement at Nuremburg, have a highly acclaimed weekly television series, be the first singer to perform a concert in the Astrodome and record a record-breaking live album, Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall, that world win five Grammy Awards and stay at number one for thirteen weeks.

Never underestimate the will of a person born to perform.

At the age of 22, Alexis Nicole Whitney contracted meningitis, an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. She was hospitalized for two months.

“I was in a coma for two weeks. My heart had stopped twice; if my heart stopped another time, they were going to let me go,” she told Sarah Rufca Nielsen in Houstonia Magazine. Doctors told her she may never walk again.

Shortly after her release from the hospital, Whitney was back on stage, albeit in a wheelchair, performing Annie Lennox’s No More I Love You’s wearing a hospital gown and two patches over her eyes. “That performance was really what kept me going,” she told Houstonia.

Whitney has been performing, winning titles, and packing houses ever since. Never underestimate the will of a person born to perform.

I think it’s stupid and uneducated. There are more important things to worry about than us. We have been around for many years and we are not going anywhere.
