KeKe Brooks

Drag can be sassy, glitzy, hilarious, and a bit of a camp. One thing it never is, is a drag. On any given night at one of Houston’s show bars, one may find a drag queen performing as Tina Turner or Whitney Houston or hosting and performing a karaoke contest.

This month’s Montrose Star Spotlight shines on a Bayou City native whose talents have allowed her to take command of any stage she steps or dances on. Having caught the performance bug at an early age, she has a unique ability to make a connection with an audience.

The August Montrose Star Spotlight shines on KeKe Brooks.

What is your original hometown?

I’m a Houston native with roots going back generations.

How long have you been doing drag/entertaining?

My passion to perform began at an early age. I would dance around the house with a broom, channeling my inner Whitney Houston and Tina Turner! Two legendary icons.

When was the first time you did drag, and what motivated you to begin performing?

My first breakout role was at Kashmere High School, when I was challenged to take on the role of Beyoncé, lip-syncing “The Closer I Get to You”, and the rest, as they say, is history!

Is there a certain number that your fans insist that you perform?

The fans are most taken by my R&B collection. But the most requested are Tamar Braxton’s “Love and War,” and anything from the iconic Whitney Houston or Toni Braxton.

What is the thing you enjoy most about being on stage?

What I enjoy most about being on stage is the ability to connect with my audience, which transcends to normal communication.

Do you have a pet peeve about being on stage?

I don’t think I have a pet peeve about being on stage, or I haven’t figured it out yet!

Who is your inspiration? Any drag role models?

My inspiration is God! No matter what life throws at me, I know I can trust Him wholeheartedly, even when I don’t understand something that happens in life sometimes. I can always count on Him to be by my side! I would also like to say my mother, because with all the struggles she has been through, starting at a very young age, she continues to wake up with a smile and be the best version of herself!

What is an interesting fact about you?

I never thought I would host karaoke and love it as much as I do. The fact is, I have always been nervous to speak in front of a crowd! Then, once I was given a chance by Tanya Hyde, the audience response made me feel like I had been speaking on the mic forever! Now it just comes naturally to entertain and help people have a great experience while drinking lol!

When not on stage, what do you do for fun?

Cooking, creating wigs, creating new costumes for myself, and working on being more creative with my craft!

What do you feel is the most misunderstood thing about drag culture?

The most misunderstood thing about drag to me is someone not understanding this is how we express ourselves — through our art, just like the artists we impersonate. Drag not only helps us feel more confident but also helps many other cisgender men and women who support our community. I love drag because I get to touch the hearts of others, in many different situations, which makes me feel I am living with a purpose!

What are your thoughts on all the anti-trans and anti-drag show rhetoric coming from political activists?

We are out here trying to make a living bringing joy and entertainment to the masses! What part of that is so wrong? We do not go around judging people for who they want to be or what they want to do in life. Why do we have to be judged?

Do you have a most-embarrassing moment on stage?

I wouldn’t say embarrassing, but getting lost in my performance is a very popular moment! When you feel the music, you may sometimes lose a wig or a shoe. This just means you did what you came to do — to be the best entertainer you want to be, without caring about any criticism that is not constructive.

Where and when can we catch your act?

I am at Barcode every Monday starting at 9 pm, for Magic Mic, plus a Magic Mic Karaoke Contest with cash prizes, sponsored by James and Malcom Lofton and Kiss Restaurant. Also, at Barcode every Wednesday at 10:30 pm for Magic Mic Karaoke Part 2, every third Wednesday for Hump Day Honey’s Show and Classic Honey’s at 9 pm, and every fourth Sunday of the month for Kekeokee Karaoke, 10 pm ’til 1 am.
