There is a misconception that drag queens only care about hair, makeup, hoping they don’t pull something when they do their next split, and that they remain oblivious to world happenings. Month after month, our Star of the Month column disproves that mistaken idea.

Just one example of drag queens being in touch with today’s headlines came when Kitty Kontour expressed concern over a number of hot-button issues. When asked about anti-trans and anti-drag show rhetoric, she talked about rainbow crosswalks and topics one might find at any office water cooler discussion, like fixing the roads, the economy, the homeless problem and the Epstein files.

The art form of drag is historically and inherently political. Many drag artists are deeply aware of current events, especially those that threaten the LGBTQ+ community, and frequently use their platforms to advocate for social change and raise awareness.

Don’t forget that the Stonewall Riots were started by drag queens, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. During the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, drag queens used their platform to provide safe-sex education and support for people with AIDS through countless benefit shows — an act of selflessness that continues to this day.

This month, the Montrose Star Spotlight is shining on Kitty Kontour.

Name: Kitty Kontour

Zodiac sign: Virgo

Where is your hometown?
Pasadena, Texas, but now I reside in Houston.

How long have you been in the entertainment industry?
I’ve been doing drag since I was 18, so now eight years.

When was the first time you did drag and what was your first time on stage like?
My first ever time on stage was at a drag competition on Dessie’s Drag Race. I went home first. But, to be fair, girl, I was a hot mess!

Do you have a signature song — a number your fans insist that you perform?
Anything Chappel Roan!

What is the thing you enjoy most about being on stage?
I love the attention, lol.

Do you have a pet peeve about being on stage?
I’m very blind and the bright lights don’t help so most the time I don’t see anyone unless I’m up close to them, ha ha.

Who are your inspirations, personally and professionally?
I love women, so most pop divas inspire me, especially the confidence and beauty they bring to their art forms! Some of my favorites are Doja Cat, Lana Del Rey, Sza, Gaga and so many others.

What do you feel is the most misunderstood thing about drag culture?
That we’re always happy, lol. I feel like drag is our outlet and where we get to just shine and escape from the reality of the world, which feels amazing even if it’s just for five minutes pretending to sing someone else’s songs. At the end of the day, the drag comes off and we go back to being human and having feelings and struggles like everyone else.

Texas Governor Abbott just signed the “Bathroom Bill”. What are your thoughts on all the anti-trans and anti-drag show rhetoric coming from right-wing politicians?
I think they’re trying so hard to make the LGBTQ2+ the problem in their world for some odd reason. Trans people and queer people being who they are and loving who they love does not affect you, a rainbow cross walk does not affect you, and taking a shit in a stall where others are doing the same does not affect you. Baby, they need to focus on fixing these roads, bettering our economy, and managing this homeless crisis. And release those files!

This Thanksgiving, what will you be giving thanks for?
I’m thankful for my family, friends and all my supporters who always uplift me even when I’m not at my 100 percent. Also, my dog.

Where and when can we catch your act?
Catch me every Wednesday at South Beach for Millennial Dolls, voted best drag show in Houston.
