“It’s a good thing I was born a girl, otherwise I’d be a drag queen,” is a hilarious quote by Dolly Parton, who turned 80 last month. With her love for glamour, big hair and over the top appearances, she’d have been a fabulous drag queen.

As fate would have it, Dolly became a queen after all, the Queen of Country Music, with a career spanning over 60 years that includes eleven Grammy Awards and 25 number one hits.

Another title Dolly holds is gay icon. She’s a strong LGBTQ+ ally due to her consistent support for love, acceptance, equality and her outspoken advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.

It’s no wonder that Dolly Parton is one of the most admired performers by drag queens who frequently don big wigs, big heels, and big, um, you know, and work audiences with tunes like “9 to 5”, “Here You Come Again”, “Jolene”, and “I Will Always Love You”.

Dolly is an inspiration to many people all over the world, including our featured entertainer this month. The Montrose Star Spotlight is shining on Julianne McBride, AKA Phoebe Seymour.

Name: My name is Julianne McBride, but everyone knows me as Phoebe Seymour!

Pronoun: She/her both in and out of drag.

Zodiac sign: I am a Virgo.

Where is your hometown? Deer Park, Texas.

How long have you been in the entertainment industry?
I’ve been in the entertainment industry my entire life. I played baby Jesus at three months old and have not stopped performing ever since! I’ve done musical theater my whole life! I ended up going to college for musical theater at Sam Houston State University where I also fell in love with vintage clothing and special effects make up. After Covid, I discovered I can hone all my skills into my perfect form of self-expression, thus Phoebe was born on June 27, 2021!

Describe what it was like the first time you did drag.
The first time I ever did drag, I was very nervous but ultimately I had an incredible drag mother, who hyped me up and helped me out whenever I needed!

Do you have a signature song — a number your fans insist that you perform — or perhaps your go-to song?
I don’t have a go-to song, but you can always trust that Phoebe will have freckles, black lipstick and will be live singing!

Do you get stage fright?
I get stage fright every single time I’m about to perform, but that is the beauty of live performance. The fact that you get nervous means you care, and that’s all that matters!

What is the thing you enjoy most about being on stage?
The thing I enjoy most about being on stage is the connections that I get to make with the people in the audience. My goal is to always make you smile, laugh, or cry.

Do you have a pet peeve about being on stage?
I’m a pretty relaxed performer. I go with the flow most of the time, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when I am not allowed to show my art the way I’d like to, whether that be because there is no live microphone or being told to mold and fit into a box!

Who are your inspirations, personally and professionally?
One of my biggest inspirations will always be Dolly Parton, as she really was one of the first globally known AFAB drag queens!

What do you feel is the most misunderstood thing about drag culture?
Drag culture is an art form that can take many shapes and sizes! I think one thing people forget is that drag is just the persona of an over exaggerated person! It’s not inherently sexual or bad in any nature! There are drag performers for all viewers!

What are your thoughts on all the anti-trans and anti-drag show rhetoric coming from politicians?
My thoughts on the matter are simply why can’t we all respect one another as human beings as an artist? It takes time, money and effort to express yourself in this manner. And to have all of these rules and allegations set into place is kind of a slap in the face. It truly breaks my heart the way our society can be so close-minded when we’ve come this far.

Do you have a special Valentine to spend your day with?
Valentine’s Day is a day of love, and I not only plan to spend it with my partner, but also with my friends and family!

Who is your celebrity crush?
Of course, I have a celebrity crush! It is none other than the incredible vocalist, Yebba!

Where can we find you on social media?
On Instagram I am thephoebe_seymour. And on Facebook I am Julianne McBride Phoebe Seymour.

Where and when can we catch your act?
You can catch me every single Saturday and Sunday at JR’s Bar and Grill in Montrose. Keep an eye on my social media. I post when I’ll be having shows throughout the year.
