In 2025, as hard as the Texas legislature may have tried to regulate transgender people and drag shows out of existence, they failed miserably. Despite several anti-trans laws enacted last year, drag shows still exist and may well be standing taller and prouder than ever.
In true steel magnolia style, the phrase “That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” is easily applied to today’s drag community. Look for 2026 to bring fierce determination, even bigger hair and fabulous shows. Their stars are shining as bright as ever.

The January Montrose Star Spotlight is shining on India Sherry.

India Sherry

Name: India Sherry

Your pronoun: She

Zodiac sign: Leo

Where is your hometown?
I was born in Oakland, California and lived mostly in New Orleans during my young adult life.

How long have you been in the entertainment industry?
Over 37 years.

Describe what it was like the first time you did drag.
Well, being born an intersex male to female opened my life up to the female aspect of my birth disposition. Because of this reasoning I’ve been doing drag for many years. The drag performing discovery came into perspective in the mid-to-late eighties.

Do you have a signature song or a number your fans insist that you perform or perhaps your go-to song?
My most requested or most admired songs would be any song list from the eighties era.

Do you get stage fright?
Sometime, but not often. My love for community and connecting to my audience is like a drug. It’s addicting.

What is the thing you enjoy most about being on stage?
I love the creative process that both performing and competing have on me, the craving power I get each and every time I hit a stage. The looks I get sometimes, it’s like a look of disbelief most of the spectators have when you’re first called out to the stage. Those looks are priceless to see.

Do you have a pet peeve about being on stage?
I love being in total control of my vision of the song. For me, I take on a different role. This comes with each number I’m performing. The look I create when performing most of the time means totally embodying the look and the characteristic of the artist of the song.

Who are your inspirations, personally and professionally?
I would have to say my parents; the issues they faced with raising me and helping me through my life’s journey was not easy. I would have to say one of my siblings, which is the oldest, that has passed away. He was very head strong and ambitious and faced challenges very positively.

What do you feel is the most misunderstood thing about drag culture?
That we all carry the same thought processes and styles. We have so much diversity and talent. Among the drag industry, not every performer is called to entertain. Some are very amazing at hosting shows, some are great at just being an artist that’s good at making mixes and creating talents and numbers to perform. But they don’t have an interest to be a drag performer.

What are your thoughts on all the anti-trans and anti-drag show rhetoric coming from right-wing politicians?
I believe we all should have the right to live free from ridicule and persecution.

Did you make any New Year resolutions, and can you share them with us?
I like being honest even with myself. I like to set realistic goals for myself that give me a sense of accomplishment. I don’t make resolutions at the eve of a new year. I just set higher new and achievable goals.

Given your choice, what celebrity would you have loved to find yourself ringing in the New Year with?
Celine Dion.

What are your wishes for 2026?
That we can all come to the understanding and agreement that we are all like-minded people in the world living for the same thing — that is peace, love, and acceptance.

Where can we find you on social media?
India Sherry on Facebook and Instagram. You can find my love for baking at korieadia.

Where and when can we catch your act?
Unfortunately, I don’t perform very much here in Houston. At most venues here, I find it extremely hard to get work. So, I travel out more into the tri-state area like New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabama. You can follow my Facebook page; I list each and every time I’m hitting a stage.
