I had a dream!

I was dozing nicely when… The nicest thoughts and visions suddenly came rushing, quite clearly… It was now all over the news media: Congress had finally realized we would default on our national debt and be ruined, and in this severe crisis, the Democrats and Republicans suddenly agreed to do the big, logical, obvious things regardless of politics! Astounding, the parties agreeing to major changes without bickering, character assassination, etc. Unheard of in my lifetime. They admitted and agreed all at once to save America, and were acting on an expedited basis to (a) no more excessive spending on military, (b) to tax the rich, and (c) to adjust the entitlements into balance. These changes would thereby create an annual budget surplus and begin to pay down our national debt, which would save the Dollar! Also, to reduce our total healthcare system expenses, they resolved to eliminate the middle-man, now no need for health insurance, and finally have free direct national health care for all; also counseling/ help programs for the homeless, and help programs for the very low paid employed; also to raise the national minimum wage, and to generally encourage the attitude of returning prosperity to the USA. Major! Huge. Finally. So we will still have just as many “Haves”, but not so many “Have-Nots.”

They finally admitted that no country threatens the United States, while pretending any threats to us halfway around the world are preposterous. And, that blowing money on our military “defense” above a basic level was wasteful, stupid, counterproductive, and it keeps half the world our enemy. They resolved to instead return to the wonderful ideals of the United Nations. They resolved to close all our 800+ foreign military bases and otherwise reduce the military to only the needed size. With the prevailing American love of its military, they realized the exiting troops would be welcomed into the overall employment market. And they resolved to help our now unneeded Military Industrial Complex workers get actual worthwhile jobs, with most of the scientists going to Silicon Valley to make our great Tech companies even better, some to Medical Research organizations, and some to the growing Satellite/ Space industries. Others could remain, as the then smaller military manufacturers would retool to make domestic recreation vehicles, boats, gliders/ small planes, other hi-tech items, toys, and other needs as they arise. The CIA would be reduced by 90%, with some of the worst characters thrown in jail for their crimes, and the agency returned to its actual purpose of gathering intelligence, not “operations”, overthrowing foreign countries, international dirty tricks, or misleading (lying to) our own news/ media organizations. All the Health Insurance administrators thrown out of work would be counseled, some re-employed at actual medical offices, and others absorbed into other insurance lines or the general economy.

They realized that the tax rates on the highest incomes had been much higher in past decades when we (the U.S.A.) were far more prosperous because of it, and to finally get back to common sense about this, including eliminating the ability to reduce/ eliminate taxes for the highest earners by “sheltering.”
My head was reeling at the tremendous, incredible positive developments that would literally save our country. Ah, the pleasure in seeing it all. Imagine the good our government will do with so much “found money.” America’s future assured.

And then I woke up to the alarm clock playing an old 60s tune by the Animals, “We gotta get out of this place, if it’s the last thing we ever do…” Ah, such a dream, such a beautiful scenario. What a pity it is not (yet) reality.
