By Rick Ehrlich

We live in insane times, when one plus one can equal seven, or maybe negative three, or anything the Authority says. Then they change it the next day. Pay your taxes, but have no pretense that our people or our representatives decide where the money goes. In our nation of immigrants, immigrants now get no respect. Nor do the little people.

Our main leaders are “very religious Christians,” yet they criticize the Pope. Military chief Hegseth prays for Jesus to help kill, our “Peace President” threatens to destroy an entire civilization—one that is 7,000 years old—and while they present themselves as clean Christian boys, they absolutely do the bidding of the Israeli president, Mr. Netanyahu. His most important goals are to seize neighbors’ land, make Palestinians disappear, and “prevent Iran from having nuclear weapons.”

But Iran’s leaders have issued a religious edict against nuclear weapons. Our own U.S. intelligence agencies have repeatedly said Iran does not have them and is not pursuing them, and UN inspectors have continuously found no weapons program and no evidence of one. Nevertheless, we now spend billions making war on Iran to prevent nuclear weapons there. And if any person objects to the Israeli program, that person is accused of being anti-Jewish, even if he is Jewish himself. The insanity is mind-numbing.

Although no nation has threatened the USA on our shores since 1812, we nevertheless raise our military budget every single year. It is always affirmatively voted for by both the majority of Republican and the majority of Democratic legislators. We have 800 foreign military bases—for defense? Really?

Iran never did anything to America—you cannot consider its late-1970s internal revolution and the related embassy hostility a legitimate casus belli. We, meanwhile, had toppled Iran’s elected government, CIA-style, in 1953. The Iran war is hugely unpopular with Americans and expensive for them, yet both major parties support it in the Senate and House. Under the War Powers Act, congressional approval is required by April 30. At this writing, on April 21, that approval appears to be no problem. The only determinant will be whether some semblance of sanity can be found to stop this particular insanity sooner, allowing a new focus on new insanities.

And in this situation, due to the unique locations of the Straits of Hormuz and Malacca, more war means worse consequences for Americans and for the world economy. The more war there is, the greater the constraints on petroleum supply and cost worldwide, which will also affect fertilizer availability and cost in world agriculture, and petrochemical availability and cost in global plastics production. An off-ramp is sorely needed. Meanwhile, it is cease-fire, war, cease-fire, war; he is up, he is down, he is left, he is right, he is further right—who can guess? He shuffles his cabinet and advisory deck. And plays golf.

As the U.S. Treasury gets broker and broker, we can no longer afford this war, or any war. Maybe, maybe, maybe he will decide to calm down, appear steadier, and make efforts to salvage the midterm elections this November in an effort to prevent a washout for his party. And do not forget: half the people voted for him.
