Time for NATO to Fold Its Tent and Go Home?

We are told often that NATO is a wonderful, worthwhile organization that keeps the world safe. Smoke and mirrors, baby. NATO was started post-war, in 1949, chartered as a DEFENSIVE pact of North Atlantic countries, who mutually pledged that if any is attached, they agree to participate in a NATO war against the attacker.

But in reality, no NATO country was attacked at all from 1949 through 2025, a full 76 years. So, you’d think NATO never had a single military act. But you’d be wrong. NATO has been in many OFFENSIVE military actions, all since 1991, acting contrary to and violating its contractual charter. And to make matters much worse, they also ignored the NORTH ATLANTIC part. Since the Soviet Union went broke and disbanded in 1991, NATO took in 19 more countries, none being in the North Atlantic rim, almost all being very far from it.

NATO from 1949 was quickly turned into the Offshore Marketing Department for the USA Military Industrial Complex (MIC). For 76 years, the USA has pressured all the members to buy huge amounts of military arms from our American MIC. As our domestic deep state press, think tanks, major political parties (seemingly acting in concert) continually promoting the ideas that ‘target a country du jour’ is an enemy who threatens us and NATO, and we, and NATO, must therefore heavily arm up and return the threats. Of course, making huge military equipment purchases from our MIC. And as the big brother of NATO, we push NATO member countries to buy American.

But being a sucker is not nearly as bad as making war in an unjust, or irrelevant way.

During the “Cold War” (since the Soviet Union did not attack any NATO country) NATO had no need for one single military act. (Money wasted?) But since, NATO went crazy, made war liberally and easily, and seemingly with pleasure, against the US’s assorted picks. The former republics of Yugoslavia 1992 through 2001 including Bosnia, Herzegovina (direct bombing and naval blockades in the Adriatic Sea); direct war on the Republic of Srpska, Serbia, Macedonia; NATO made war 2002 thru 2021 in Afghanistan, Iraq; Pakistan 2005-2006, in 2009-2016 Somalia and Yemen, Libya in 2011, and stocking and pushing Ukraine as a proxy for NATO war against Russia – ongoing since 2022.

Nuclear war threat be damned! All of these countries are elsewhere in the world. They were and are irrelevant to the populations of the NATO countries. None of our business, yet all made huge sales numbers for the American MIC.

Surprise!

Now finally there is a growing populist backlash in the European countries and the USA. There are fairly large and growing percentages of voters in most NATO countries who want less war, less military, less public spending and big borrowing to fund huge military increases.

A recognition that almost all Euro- immigration is from places where NATO and or the USA made war or war-like sanctions that ruined a target economy, pushing its people to seek greener pastures. A parallel non-military organization, the European Union (EU), including its components European Commission, European Council and European Parliament, has also gone crazy in its rabid military hawkism addressed to non-European areas. And they discourage dissent, even though they are not elected officials, vis a vis, citizens of their own countries.

Bottom line: NATO was irrelevant and a complete waste of money during the Cold War (inception 1949 thru Soviet breakup 1991). But since 1992 NATO has been so much worse than an irrelevant waste. Causing harm wherever they go, wasting big money (mostly borrowed), warmongering and even toying with nuclear war. This writer believes NATO should have been disbanded in 1991, and surely be shut down now. Boys with toys, and they love to play. They should all go look for honest jobs immediately.
