Sure has been a hot summer, right? As you and your sweat soaked waistband know, Texas clocked a record number of 100 degree-plus days in 2022. The globe, it seems, is a middle-aged woman who is experiencing serious hot flashes. No wonder she’s cranky.
And just because we made it to September, that doesn’t mean that the heat is over. No, indeed. It appears that another kind of hot is making itself painfully comfortable in the good ol’ US of A.
By the time this issue of MONROSE STAR hits the literal and digital streets, former President Donald Trump likely will have 1) announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election or 2) been indicted for “the removal and concealment of national defense information, giving that information to those not legally entitled to possess it, and a possible obstruction of justice charge by failing to return that information,†says U.S. Supreme Court Justice wanna-be, now conservative pundit Andrew Napolitano, speaking to Newsweek.
What is perhaps most shocking, the two polar-opposite concepts seem no more unimaginable than the season finale of The Trump Show which has been on rerun mode since 1979 now plays nonstop in the media.
Near the end of August, two Tweets referring to this ultimate Trump travesty made my head jerk around so hard that I heard a record needle jerking across an LP.
According to LGBTQNation.com, a staffer in the office of Eric Swalwell, a Democratic U.S. Representative from California, received a frightening, frightening telephone call in late August. “A man said he’s coming to our office with an assault rifle to kill me,†Rep. Swalwell tweeted. “I hesitate to share this but how else do I tell you we are in violent times, & the architects are Trump & [House Minority Leader Kevin] McCarthy. Bloodshed is coming.â€
Adding insult to insanity, the caller claimed to be a gay conservative. Cue record scratch.
About the same time, Lindsey Graham, a Republican Senator from South Carolina, said in a FOX News interview: “If they try to prosecute President Trump…there literally will be riots in the streets. I worry about the country.â€
It’s safe to say that we’re all worried, Lindsey.
Senator Graham didn’t stop there, though. He went on to say: “Most Republicans, including me, believe when it comes to Trump, there is no law. It’s all about getting him.â€
Then Graham said to Swalwell, “I dare you to step over this line,†which he drew in the sand with his Hushpuppies loafer. So Swalwell stepped over the line. And then Graham said, “I dare you to knock this off,†balancing his IPhone 3gs with its red, white and blue MAGA case on his soft, South Carolinian shoulder. So Swalwell flicked that phone off with his regular, man-sized fingers. Then Graham got all red, white and blue in the face and sputtered that Swalwell was just lucky that he was wearing his Sunday-go-to-meeting suit, otherwise he show him, boy. And then Graham pretended he heard his constituency calling and skittered away.
OK, that last paragraph didn’t really happen, except on The Andy Griffith Show. But it doesn’t sound implausible, does it?
It pains me to admit that I agree with Sen. Graham. When it comes to Trump, there is no law. Every day reveals another tidbit detailing Trump’s lawless, dangerous and straight-up treasonous behavior. I long for the good ol’ days when we were simply disgusted by his p*ssy grabbing, and not too concerned about keeping his tiny little boy sized fingers off his big nuclear button. Gentler, simpler times.
It also pains me to say that I interpret Graham’s “riot†warning to mean “civil war.†America’s first Civil War took approximately 620,00 American lives. (For reference, the Centers for Disease Control estimates total American deaths from Covid-19 at 1,048,639, as of the end of August.)
A recent poll conducted among U.S. citizens by YouGov and The Economist, 43 percent said another civil war was at least “somewhat likely.†Among strong Democrats and independents that figure was 40 percent. Among “strong republicans ,†54 percent believe civil war was at least “somewhat likely.â€Â
What to do? Short of filling our canteens with spring water, packing some hard tack into our ruck sacks and placing dried lavender petals from our beloveds in our pocket Bibles, our only defense may be our vote.
Here are some important dates to note as we approach the 2022 midterms: Tuesday, October 11 is the last day to register to vote. Monday, October 24 is the first day to vote early. Friday, November 4 is the last day to vote early. Tuesday, November 8 is Election Day. More info is at VoteTexas.gov.
Let’s all plan accordingly, please.
And try to stay cool.
