In 2002, pop diva Cher launched what was billed as her Farewell Tour. Originally planned as a 59-city jaunt across North America, quickly blossomed into over 100 stops and by the time it ended two years later, was a world tour that included 325 shows.
Cher had frequently proclaimed this was her final concert tour and we all know that sentiment, unlike the star saying it, did not age well.
While some performers really can retire, if we may use that phrase, others have performing in their blood, and the word retire just isn’t in their vocabulary.
Ava Aurora thought she could leave the stage and the spotlight behind her. A night out on the town in 2018, where she caught a show with Houston Drag Legend Roxanne Collins, made her realize how much she missed the stage.
Ava’s been entertaining audiences ever since and is in the Montrose Star Spotlight.

Name:

Zodiac sign:
Sagittarius
Hometown:
Shreveport, Louisiana
How long have you been doing drag/entertaining?
I started drag in 2015 in Dallas, Texas. I took a break in 2018 when I moved to Houston and re-started from the ground up in 2021.
When was the first time you did drag and what motivated you to begin performing?
The first time I did drag was in New Orleans on New Years Eve in 2015. I met Tiffany Alexander and Josalyn Foxx from Season 6 of Drag Race. To say I was a booger would be an understatement… but that didn’t stop me, and the rest is history!
What is your favorite number to perform?
Any ‘80s is my go-to if I don’t know what to do. So, a bit of Sheila E, Sheena Easton, Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, etc.
What is the thing you enjoy most about being on stage?
When I pull out a lesser-known song and someone in the audience knows it. I love it when people jam with me!
What do you feel is the most misunderstood thing about drag culture?
I think that a lot of people have a misconception that drag queens are catty. We may have a flair for the dramatic, but I can honestly say that I get along with 99 percent of all entertainers I have worked with.
Who is your inspiration? Any drag role models?
Phew, I have quite a few. Former National Showgirl Supreme Kymber Devine is one of my favorite entertainers. Houston’s own Roxanne Collins, former Miss Gay America Dextaci and former National Showgirl Mahogany Campbell, as well. The list goes on. I always appreciate an entertainer who looks like they are genuinely enjoying being on stage and cutting up with the audience.
What is an interesting fact about you?
In 2018 when I quit drag for a bit, I got rid of all my drag. When I moved to Houston, I saw Roxanne Collins at Barcode and seeing the passion she has for entertaining, it took me right back to where I was and started my career all over again.
When not on stage what do you do for fun?
I hang out at home with my husband, Logan, and my two cats, Bruce Wayne and Barbara Jean. If I have nothing else to do, I’m stoning!
What is the most recent television series you binge watched?
We are binging Abbott Elementary currently. I also binge the entire series of Scandal once a year. LOVE Kerry Washington.
Where can we catch your act?
I am a cast member at Island Time Beach Bar and Grill. You can also catch me at Hotel Vesper in Houston. Most commonly though, you can see me tipping at any pageant around Texas.
