Serena Spellman

A meteoric rise to Island Goddess

By Johnny Trlica

Just over ten years ago he entered a talent night contest. “So, You Think You Can Drag†hosted by Kofi was a regular feature at Meteor. The Montrose club is just a memory now, but Serena Spellman is still showing the world who can drag, and in March won the Miss Island Goddess crown in Galveston.

On his performance at the pageant, held at Island Time Beach Bar and Grill, Tisha Flowers commented on Facebook, “(Seth Fisher) Serena Spellman did such an amazing job last night at Island Goddess, sweeping every category! Congratulations sis, you looked gorgeous!â€Â

“What a night. Congratulations to our newly crowned Miss Island Goddess Seth Fisher aka Serena Spellman. You were  absolutely amazing last night,†wrote Terry Fuller-Waymire.

How long have you been doing drag/entertaining?

I’ve been doing drag for a little over 10 years now. Starting at a club named Meteor back in 2014 for an open talent night hosted by Kofi, I quickly knew this would be a path I was wanting to take.

Favorite thing about drag/entertaining?

My favorite thing about entertaining is being able to create a character and storyline of your own without worrying about someone else’s perception of who you are. It’s an amazing opportunity to create anything from your imagination in a way that releases others from the monotony of everyday life.

What is your favorite number/and or celebrity to perform?

One of my favorite numbers to perform has to be singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls†as Ursula from The Little Mermaid. To embody such a classic character and ut your own twist on it is so exciting and fun for me. It really makes an audience more engaged when you’re having just as much fun as they are.

Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration stems from many different people. It’s hard to narrow it down to one person when so many people have their own inspiration qualities. However, some of my biggest are Dessie Love Blake, Kymber Devine and Kofi since they have absolutely owned their careers as artists.

An interesting fact:

An interesting fact about me is that I may seem a certain way in drag, however my dream is to homestead. To be completely self-sufficient in life is an important goal that I would love to achieve one day.

When not on stage what do you do for fun?

When I’m not on the stage I love to garden, take care of my animals, and take time to relax. I think this world is very focused on constantly staying busy and I think it’s important to take time for yourself to sit back and enjoy it. You never know how much time you have left so enjoy it while you can!

Where can we catch your act?

You can catch me hosting karaoke every Wednesday and Thursday and on our rotating weekend cast at Island Time Beach Bar.
