While most communities across the United States celebrate Pride in June to coincide with the Stonewall Riots and the traditional observation of Pride, several cities across Texas wait until later in the year. Most often the delay is to avoid the oppressive Lone Star State summer heat, and this year has proven to show how smart a move that is.Â
Since October is National Coming Out Month, this is another great opportunity to throw a festival or parade, or both.Â
For members of the LGBTQ+ community who do not like the big crowds of the big city, these smaller events in our smaller sister cities may be more to their liking. Â
GALVESTONÂ
Galveston loves a party and while Pride Galveston was held over Labor Day Weekend, another weekend of Pride events is planned for October 20 through 22. Third Coast Pride Fest will have drag shows at the Island’s bars, family events, live music and be capped by a parade in downtown Galveston on Sunday afternoon. Â
Grand Marshal for the parade is Kymber DeVine, described by Third Coast PrideFest’s Facebook page as “a shining beacon of love, acceptance, and empowerment for all! Kymber DeVine is an incredible advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, a tireless champion for equality, and a passionate leader in our community. Her dedication to making the world a more inclusive and welcoming place for everyone has left an indelible mark on our hearts,†adds the post. For more information visit GayGalveston.com.Â
KATYÂ
There’s more to do in Katy than attend high school football games. First Christian Church of Katy (yes, you read that right), is hosting Katy Pride on Saturday, October 14. The event promises to have vendors, exhibitors, and a mainstage full of performers. Â
After the festival, stick around for the after party. “Get Wicked with the Queens (and King)” will feature Kiki Dion Van Wales, Vegas Van Cartier, Dessie Love-Blake and Mon’Terio J. Ross. The show will be held at FCC. For more information on Katy Pride, visit Katy Pride LGBTQ Inc. on Facebook.Â
ROSENBERG
“We are thrilled to announce Fort Bend County Pride , with support from Fort Bend County, Precinct 4 Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy! This upcoming event celebrates diversity, inclusion, and the LGBTQ+ community in our county. Â
“This collaboration signifies a powerful alliance committed to fostering acceptance, promoting equality, and supporting the rights of all individuals. By joining forces, we aim to create a vibrant and inclusive space where everyone can be their authentic selves without fear of discrimination.Â
Fort Bend County Pride will feature a range of engaging activities, insightful discussions, and entertaining performances that showcase the rich diversity of our community. Through this event, we hope to raise awareness, foster understanding, and create opportunities for dialogue and connection among community members,†states the organization’s Facebook page.Â
The inaugural event with kick off November 12, 2 p.m. at the Fort County Fair Grounds in Rosenberg. Visit Fort Bend County Pride on Facebook.Â
THE WOODLANDS
Billing itself as the largest free Pride festival in the state, The Woodlands Pride Festival is scheduled for October 21 at Town Green Park in The Woodlands. This year is the fifth anniversary of The Woodlands Pride.Â
The Woodlands Pride was created to create a space for people to feel safe and accepted in their own town, even if it’s just for a few hours. For more information, visit TheWoodlandsPride.org.Â
