The Houston/Galveston area is home to countless entertainers and drag queens. They perform at brunches, bingo, happy hours, church events and most every bar — gay and, in some cases, straight. Many frequently offer their talents in volunteer efforts in benefits and worthy causes.Â
Beginning with this issue, MONTROSE STAR will shine a spotlight on a local star. It’s our small way of thanking the drag community for all they do to entertain and help the LGBTQ+ community.Â
For January, we feature a Houston living legend, Lana Blake.Â
Â
NAME:Â Â
Lana BlakeÂ
ZODIAC SIGN:Â Â
SagittariusÂ
HOME CITY:Â Â
Houston was born and raised.Â
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING DRAG/ENTERTAINING? Â
About 35 years.Â
FAVORITE THING ABOUT DRAG/ENTERTAINING? Â
I love it when everyone is so immersed in my performance that you can hear a pin drop. I love the look on people’s faces when they’re truly entertained by what I do.Â
Â
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE NUMBER AND/OR CELEBRITY TO PERFORM? That’s hard because I’ve done so much that I love for over 35 years. I’d have to say that anything that truly connects with the audience. I do a lot of characters from TV and movies that are “dialogue-heavy†and I love those numbers. Julia Sugarbaker, Karen Walker, Elaine Stritch, Kaye Stevens. (Feel free to look up the ones you don’t recognize.)Â
WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION? Â
I’m inspired by everything, honestly. I can be having a conversation with someone and something we said sparks inspiration, so I’ll jot down a note and create a mix from that. I’m also inspired by other entertainers that I love to watch (Tommie Ross, Sasha Colby, Dina Jacobs and several others.)Â
AN INTERESTING FACT:Â Â
Although I’ve accomplished a lot in the past three decades and I try to exude confidence on stage, I second-guess myself all the time. So, if anyone is reading this and thinks some people have it all figured out… we’re only human, too.Â
WHEN NOT ON STAGE WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? Â
I’m a huge shopaholic. I’m always shopping for costumes and outfits for the stage. I’m also usually sitting in front of my desktop computer, (yes, I’m old school) making mixes for shows. I truly love what I do.Â
Â
WHERE CAN WE CATCH YOUR ACT? Â
I host karaoke at Barcode on Thursday nights, 10 p.m. ’til 1 a.m. I’m at Michael’s Outpost on Friday and Saturday nights, 7:30-9:30 p.m. I’m also at JR’s on Friday nights for karaoke, from 10 p.m. ’til 2 a.m. You can also catch me at Grand Prize (1010 Banks Street) on the last Wednesday of the month for that show from 9:30 p.m. ’til midnight. I’m also available for bookings and private parties.Â
