The term “BOI” can have different meanings, depending on the context. And that’s just in the LGBTQ+ community. To some it can mean a lesbian who adopts a boyish appearance or manner.
BOI can refer to a young transgender man who may have previously identified as a butch woman; alternatively, a trans man who is in the early stages of transitioning or a person who was assigned female at birth and does not full identify as feminine or as a woman. The term may also be attached to a gender non-conforming person who may identify with a number of LGBTQIA+ labels.
“Yes, I’m a BOI!” says Dominic Borsellino, October’s Bartender of the Month. He uses the term in an entirely different context from any of those described above. Dominic was “Born on the Island,” as in Galveston Island and islanders consider that a badge of honor.
Dominic got his start behind the bar in Galveston but has brought his talents to the big city, at the Montrose Country Club. The Montrose Country Club is described as “Houston’s unrivaled oasis, boasting culinary delights crafted by our chef, exquisite cocktails and vibrant entertainment that shines both day and night. At the heart of it all is our stunning 65-foot cocktail pool, offering our community a one-of-a-kind experience.”

Tell us about your experience bartending.
I’ve been bartending for 14 years at a bunch of places between Galveston and Houston. From Rumors Beach Bar to the Montrose Country Club!
What is your drink specialty?
Either an old-fashioned or an espresso martini!
What is your philosophy on being a good bartender?
A fun personality and genuine demeanor.
Besides the money, what do you enjoy about being a bartender?
Meeting different people from all over the world.
What is a pet peeve about being a bartender?
Less ice is not more alcohol.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever seen from behind the bar?
Plenty of fights at plenty of bars! Unfortunately, not many bars in Galveston have security, so I had to be security, bartender and manager. Kicking people out sort of became my specialty. They think “the small bartender won’t do anything” and then get surprised when I did.
If you were not a bartender, what would you be doing?
Most likely something like real estate.
With Halloween being later this month, what will your costume be?
A bartender at work.
Having been born in Galveston, one of the most haunted cities in the country, do you believe in ghosts? Ever experience any paranormal activity?
I won’t rule it out, but no, I’ve never had any experiences like that.
What do you do for fun? Any hobbies? (I believe I’ve seen you in a couple of plays
at ETC.)
Theatre is definitely fun, but not something I have the time to do as much as I’d like. These days I play lots of video games, read books and go to the movies fairly often!
Who is your favorite musical artist and what is on your current playlist?
Right now, it’s probably Noah Kahan, the last album he came out with has been on repeat for like 3 years lol.
