Kymber DeVine has been inspired by and been a fan of Cher (who hasn’t?) for most of her life, so to celebrate her 50th birthday, she planned a tribute show to her inspiration. Island Time Beach Bar and Grill was sold out weeks in advance for Kymber’s one-woman show on August 3, billed as “The Cher-ist Show on Earth!”
Wearing thirteen Cher replica looks that would make Bob Mackie envious, Kymber DeVine dazzled the standing room only crowd performing some of Cher’s greatest hits from across her seven decades in music.
As she celebrates her 50th birthday and returns to the competition stage, the August Montrose Star Spotlight shines on Kymber DeVine.
Name:
Kerry Chandler. Stage name, Kymber DeVine
Preferred pronoun:
She/her
Zodiac sign:
Born in August (Leo)
Home City:
I was born in Georgia and grew up and began my drag career in New Orleans and currently reside in LaMarque, Texas.
How long have you been doing drag/entertaining?
I began performing in drag 33 years ago.
Favorite thing about drag/entertaining?
My favorite thing about performing and entertaining is I get to wear so many beautiful costumes, hearing and seeing the crowd get excited when I step on the stage and, most importantly, I get the chance to change minds and educate some [people] about this life I’m so blessed to have. Working a lot in straight bars, the opportunities that open up for me to talk with folks and show them drag is not bad. It’s just another form of entertainment that can [be] and is a lot of fun! That has definitely been a highlight of doing what I do over these past 33 years!
What is your favorite number/and or celebrity to perform?
My favorite number to perform? Actually, there’s two. “Party in The USA” by Miley Cyrus and “Man I Feel like a Woman” by Shania [Twain]. These two are always such crowd pleasers and always get the audience singing and hyped up!
Who is your inspiration?
My all-time favorite celebrity performer is none other than Cher. Her costumes, longevity and ability to stay relevant after decades of entertaining is inspiring.
An interesting fact:
An interesting fact about me is I am an ordained minister and absolutely love officiating weddings, especially for some of my closest friends who have asked. It’s such a great honor and feeling being a part of those special moments in loved ones’ lives!
When not on stage what do you do for fun?
When I’m not performing, I am always working on costumes and keeping my drag updated and fresh. I also recently began doing CrossFit, as I am preparing to return to compete again for the national title, Miss Continental Elite. As some can relate, it’s not as easy, the older ya get the harder it is to keep that figure ya once had!
Where can we catch your act?
I am very blessed to have so many places you can catch me either hosting and/or performing these days. Island Time Beach Bar and Grill (Galveston) is my weekend home every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. During the week I host bingo and show nights in Clear Lake at The Davenport Lounge, Hitchcock Post in Hitchcock, the Great Kanakas in Webster, Diamond Jim’s in Texas City, Daryl’s Place in Santa Fe, Bedrock Tavern in Cypress and Publik Reserve in Houston.
