Cher turns 80!
Galveston salutes former resident for her birthday
Believe it or not, the Goddess of Pop was once a Texan. During her many Houston tour stops, Cher often fondly recalls her childhood years spent playing on the sun-drenched beaches of Galveston.
In her 2024 memoir, Cher details a pivotal chapter from her youth: “When times were especially hard, we’d leave California altogether to go to Texas. I was five or so when we relocated to Galveston, where Daddy got a job. I was enrolled in a new school and Gee stayed home with Mom. One of my teachers told me, “The way to remember the name of our town, Cher, is that it’s Gal with a Vest On.” After school we went to the beach, where I played happily while Mom toasted herself in the sun, a habit I took to extremes as a teenager.”
While Cher frequently acknowledges her gay fan base and has featured drag queens in some of her shows, her fan base is returning the favor this month with multiple tribute shows marking her 80th birthday on May 20.
Galveston’s gay bars will pay tribute to the former Galvestonian with three high energy tribute shows celebrating the diva’s seven consecutive decades of number one hits on Billboard charts.
Kymber Devine will be hosting two spectacular Cher shows, Friday and Saturday, May 15-16 at Island Time Beach Bar and Grill. Cast members from the Haus of Dolls, Hanna Santana, Ava Aurora, and Eternity Collins, will join Kymber performing all your favorite Cher songs.
Robert’s Lafitte is planning a Cher tribute show honoring one of the island’s most famous former residents. On Friday, May 22, Serena Spellman and Tiffany De la Vega will turn back time and cover Cher’s hits dating back to the 1960’s.
