Carly D. Nation shines on the Gulf Coast

By Johnny Trlica

For a small barrier island, Galveston sends some big-time talent into the entertainment industry. Barry White, Katherine Helmond, Valerie Perrine, “The Wizard of Oz” director King Vidor and Bill Engvall just to name a few. There must be something in that Gulf of Mexico water, right Charles Barkley?

One of the island’s newest stars is Carly Davin Nation. She is an actress, director, producer and writer. In 2021, she wrote, directed and starred in “What Ever Happened to Toddler June on Sunset Blvd?” It is a short parody based on, well, you know. Also in the film are Clair Schuler, Chris Monteith and Cassie Cass.

Carly’s latest endeavor is the new web series, “TRANSFOLK,” an upcoming drama series about a diverse group of transgender friends and family as they navigate the complexities of life and the unique experiences that come with their gender identity.

The series has a premiere date set for later this month. More information can be found at www.transfolktheseries.com.

Carly has performed on stage at Island Time Beach Bar and Grill, Robert’s Lafitte, Bar 43, 23rd Street Station, Buddy’s and Barcode.

The MONTROSE STAR Spotlight for June shines on Carly D. Nation.

How long have you been doing drag/entertaining?

October 22nd of this year will be 20 years! Whoa.

Favorite thing about drag/entertaining?

Making the crowd laugh! Best feeling ever!

What is your favorite number/and or celebrity to perform?

I enjoy doing my comedy routines, or anything with a lot of lyrics or monologues since I’m a bit of a lip sync assassin. My mouth is the only thing I can run without exhaustion :-D

Who is your inspiration?

So many great performers inspire me! I feel like I’m always inspired by the talent around me. One that comes to mind all the time, is the current Miss Gay America, Dessie Love Blake! Her work ethic, determination, and insanely quick wit are very inspiring to me!

An interesting fact:

In addition to performing, I am also very passionate about acting and filmmaking! I’m currently working on a few exciting projects that I can’t wait to show the world!

When not on stage, what do you do for fun?

Lately I’ve been working on editing my latest film project. Editing is my happy place, where I can take the pieces and put them together to create a story.

Where can we catch your act?

Drag has had to be placed on the back burner for now, but I still do pop up on the island for some special gigs! And I’m sure I’ve got a comeback of some kind brewing inside me. Or it’s gas.  😀
