Besides big hair and outrageous costumes, drag queens are quite adept at creating their stage names. The MONTROSE STAR’s Star of the Month for November has a name that stands out in a crowd.
“Yes, Artemis is a very unique name, but I didn’t pick it for the reasons that everyone thinks! A lot of people think that I took it from Greek mythology and there is some truth to that, but I actually took it from an early 2000 Disney Channel movie called Twitches starring Tia and Tamara Mowry. Tia’s name in the movie was Alex (Alexandra) but her name in her hometown of (magical dimension) Coventry was Artemis and I thought that that was such a nod to my early 2000 aesthetic in my drag that I just thought it was very fitting!” says Artemis.
In Greek mythology Artemis is the goddess of the hunt. “My last name came from Artemis being the goddess of hunting and I wanted to keep playing with that mythology so it’s not completely not about Greek mythology. It’s just not the reason I got the name!” she added.
Artemis Hunter is in the MONTROSE STAR’s Spotlight for November.

How long have you been doing drag/entertaining?
I’ve been doing drag for about two and a half years but only a little over a year in Houston! I began my career hosting drag shows at my college, Sam Houston State University!
What was it like doing drag for the first time?
It was amazing! I got to feel my femme fantasy, which ultimately gave me the confidence to even consider transitioning. It’s been such an escape for me, and it was just an amazing experience to see a new possibility of myself I never thought I could be. A cheap synthetic wig and a Fashion Nova crop top are all I needed to start my journey!
Favorite thing about drag/entertaining?
I would have to say my favorite thing about drag and entertaining is the feeling that I get when I’m on stage and the feeling that I give to the audience. It’s the natural theater girl in me that lives for that adrenaline on stage but also get so emotional seeing people tune into what I’m giving on a stage as well.
What is your favorite number/and or celebrity to perform?
My favorite celebrity right now has to be Chappell Roan but my favorite song would have to be “Greedy” by Ariana Grande.
Who is your inspiration?
I have a couple of inspirations! My aesthetic inspiration would have to be Hannah Montana, my performance inspiration would have to be Olivia Rodrigo, and my life inspiration would have to be my mother!
An interesting fact about you:
I am a theater and band kid and played the flute for eight years.
When not on stage what do you do for fun?
I love to thrift, but I love to hang out with my closest friends (Carlos Cantu, Joel Lugo and Sebastian Covington). They have helped me so much and really are the reason I’m able to keep going in hard times! They are my rock and support system so when I’m not in drag, I’m with them!
Where can we catch your act?
Anywhere! Most commonly around the gayborhood. Follow me on Instagram, Artemis.The.Doll, to find out where I’m performing!
