Ever since we started the “Star of the Month” column in January of 2024, all of the featured performers have been drag queens. We’ve profiled legends like Lana Blake and Tanya Hyde and a few newcomers like Wilhemina Guess and Kitty West.
Drag queens are not the only talented members of the LGBTQ+ community in the Houston area. On any given night of karaoke there may be an undiscovered songstress, a hilarious comedian at open mic night or a dancer with moves that make Magic Mike look like amateurs.
There is more to being a male dancer than stripping. They spend countless hours and dollars preparing costumes and rehearsing. They must exude confidence while trying to fulfill the fantasies of onlookers, all while sometimes appearing half-naked in a room full of rowdy, drunk crowds.
This month we get to know one of the talented dancers that make a night out more enjoyable and dare we say exciting
The Montrose Star Spotlight shines on Angel Oxl.
Name:
My birth name is Angelo L Barrientos Jr. and my stage name is Angel OXL Morningstar.
Zodiac sign:
I’m a double Aquarius and a Taurus rising.
Hometown and current city:
My current city is Houston, Texas, but my home away from home would have to be Puerto Rico. I’m there at least once a year, visiting family or enjoying the beaches of my island.
Do you perform full-time or have another job?
No, I do not perform full-time. It is definitely
something I do in my spare time or free time. I do have a full-time job as a luxury brand sales associate/freelancer.
You are the first performer we’ve featured that performs on stage as a male. How did you get into the entertainment field and how would you describe your performance?
I have been in the nightlife entertainment business for about two years. I started off as a go-go dancer on a box but then quickly realized I didn’t want to be off to the side. I want to be on the main stage and compete for my own titles and become a headliner for shows and not just the go-go boy.
When was the first time you did a show and what was it like?
My very first show was at Club Papi’s; I believe it was to the song “Sad Girlz Luv Money” by Kali Uchis. I performed in regular clothes and stripped down to a pair of black Nike briefs. It was definitely giving first time vibes at an amateur strip competition. To my surprise I did end up winning and started going regularly.
What is your favorite number to perform?
My favorite number to perform nowadays would have to be my personalized mix that I got made for the Mr. Texas U.S. of A. 2024 competition.
Have you won any titles or pageants? Which ones?
I have four titles under my belt at this moment: Mr. Papi’s, Mr. FLAS, Mr. Houston America and Mr. Southern Texas God U.S. of A.
As a male dancer, do you ever feel disrespected by an audience?
Honestly, when it comes to feeling disrespected, the most disrespectful thing you can do to any performer would be not paying attention while they’re performing and/or unnecessary or unwanted or asked for physical interactions. It’s sad to say, but I’ve said this in other interviews. A lot of us male entertainers are kind of desensitized to the inappropriate touching, but I would love to say consent is key.
Staying fit is a requirement for your profession. How do you stay in shape?
I would love to tell you that I work out every day and I eat super healthy but that would definitely be a lie. I try to work out at least three to four times a week, and eat as healthy as I can without stopping my soul from enjoying and indulging on whatever it is that I want in that moment. What helps me is I do love to stay active.
Who is your inspiration?
My biggest inspiration would have to be Bad Bunny and Rauw Alejandro. They both have been relentless activists for Puerto Rico and have definitely impacted the culture tremendously through their lyrics, the rhythms of their music, and their fashion.
What is an interesting fact about you?
An interesting fact about me would be I love Legos and I love to draw.
When not on stage what do you do for fun?
I love to be outside at the park or out doing something by myself or with my bestie and pup. I love to spend time shopping, eating or just sleeping, if I’m not working or working out.
Where can we catch you on stage?
Sadly, I don’t have a regular performance schedule, but you can always catch any show I’m gonna be at in the Texas area that I post on any of my social media platforms:
