A famous quote from Judy Garland, the ultimate gay icon reads, “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” While many drag queens have had long and illustrious careers impersonating other celebrities, there are many who have developed their own unique personas.
While Judy, Liza, Barbra, Bette and, of course, Cher will always have a place on the stages of gay bars, it’s refreshing seeing a performer develop her own style and character.
Wilhelmina is the reigning Miss Possum Queen, having been crowned last month, and previously held the title of Miss Spookums.
For December, the MONTROSE STAR Spotlight shines on Wilhelmina Guess.
Name:
Wilhelmina Guess
Preferred pronouns:
He / She
Zodiac sign:
Cancer (June 22)
Home City:
Deer Park, Texas
How long have you been doing drag/entertaining?
Technically eleven years now. If you consider wreaking havoc at Kroger in a blonde bob and red bow, circa 2013 doing drag!
But I’ve been entertaining since early 2016, so it’s been going on for nine years now!
What was it like doing drag for the first time?
It felt correct. But my first time on an actual stage in drag was exhilarating, I felt a rush of adrenaline better than any high you can imagine!
Favorite thing about drag/entertaining?
When I connect with someone unexpected through the song, especially someone who I’m unsure about!
What is your favorite number and / or celebrity to perform?
I did Adele once, but I haven’t dabbled in very many celebrity impersonations. In fact, I’ve mostly focused on creating a brand and a unique look to myself lately, but I’d like to try more illusions soon! My favorite number is Halsey’s “Without Me.”
Who is your inspiration?
I am my own inspiration. With drag, for some reason there’s just something within me that won’t let me quit. Especially with how strong and cutthroat Texas drag is. I have persevered to stay relevant when it was hard to. I have the patience that my family has instilled within me to handle anything the tough drag industry throws my way. But that’s not to say I don’t have my favorites in the Houston, Pasadena and Galveston drag scenes! They know who they are!
An interesting fact about you:
Before I started drag, I was an avid Karaoke Kid and I used to love to go sing a tune here and there. Still do!
When not on stage what do you do for fun?
I’m so boring nowadays. I actually need to remind myself to have fun more often! Here’s hoping that changes soon.
What is your all-time favorite Christmas gift you’ve received?
A paintball gun. I had to be no older than ten. My dad asked as soon as I unwrapped it, not to shoot my brother with it. It took about five minutes to perfect my aim and hit him right between the eyes!
What are you hoping Santa brings you this year?
Spicy fried chicken and a used car but I’ll settle for more bookings.
Where can we catch your act?
At the oldest gay bar in Texas, Robert’s Lafitte, every other Thursday as well as rotating Fridays and Saturdays and every Sunday night in Galveston. For special events I come to Montrose and Pasadena, as well!
