PFLAG Houston welcomes Mahogany Project to January meeting

January! A new year with new expectations and hopes. And, boy, do I hold tightly to a hope that 2022 will bring progress and acceptance for everyone. As a school librarian, I am disheartened and tired of seeing books with diverse protagonists and topics challenged by parents and politicians.
Representation within books is important for all children to see, not just our “diverse†children. Unfortunately, the loudest voices are those shouting for the removal of books. We can protect our children’s freedom to read by reaching out to local school boards, schools, and politicians to add a balance to the messaging, to show them that there are folks who value books like Jerry Craft’s New Kid (Black character), Raina Telgemeier’s Drama (gay characters), and Cathy Johnson’s The Breakaways (LGBTQ characters).
Please call your school or public librarian to see what you can do to protect the first amendment right to information and the freedom to read for the students in our state and communities.
January meeting. PFLAG Houston invites The Mahogany Project to share information about their mission during the January General Meeting. The Project works to reduce social isolation, stigma, and acts of injustice in the TQLGB+ communities of color. They will tell us about their programming which is designed to be a healing and affirming space that prioritizes the lives of Black folx of the transgender experience and individuals living intersectional lives.
