Stop! Just stop. As a person of Czech descent I am obligated to educate the public about a grave misrepresentation. A sausage kolache (pronounced ko-lotch) is not a kolache. Those of us in the know refer to them as a klobasnik.
Along with polka music, Czechs brought the pillowy, yeasted dough pastry to Texas in the late 18th century. My late grandmother, born Sophie Kadera, was known for her poppy seed kolaches and always referred to a meat-filled treat as a klobasnik or klobasniky.
The klobasniky is a creation of Texas Czechs, who needed a finger food for quick meals on the farm and was not originally a breakfast food. Variations, such as jalapeño or cheese versions, developed over time.
A pig in a blanket is not a kolache or klobasniky, unless it is made with kolache dough. Now that we have that settled, here’s a bit of news shared by Houston Rainbow Herald.
South Beach, Doc’s and Sears, oh my!
It’s seems to be getting harder and harder for businesses to stay afloat in Montrose. South Beach is the latest Montrose gay business to call it quits, at least for now. In a Facebook post on February 1, the bar wrote: “South Beach Houston is closed for remodeling effective immediately. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please keep the party going at JR’s, the most popular bar in Montrose. We will post updates and events so stay tuned, Houston.â€
South Beach opened in 2001 after a fire in the building formerly known as Heaven, reports the Houston Chronicle. This marks the third Charles Armstrong-owned business to close in two years. Montrose Mining Company and Meteor both were shuttered in 2016.
On a related note, if you are craving a Whopper after having a few drinks at JR’s, you’ll have to drive a lot farther to get one now. The Burger King located at 1002 Westheimer served its last sandwich on January 22, reports Swamplot.com.
A couple of blocks down the street, Doc’s Motorworks Bar and Grill on the corner of Westheimer and Graustark turned out the lights, as well, Swamplot reported on January 26.
Long time Midtown staple, Sears ended a decades long run on January 28 when it closed its doors, reports the Houston Chronicle.
The Sears & Roebuck Co. built the store in 1939, signing a 99-year lease on the building with owners Rice Management. No announcement has been made on plans for the building.
Not to be outdone, Prince’s Hamburgers has closed its last Houston restaurant, reported the Houston Chronicle. A victim of Hurricane Harvey’s massive flooding, the location at 3425 Ella Boulevard was the last location standing for the institution that opened its first Bayou City drive-in 84 years ago.
Gaga cancels dates, Cher adds them
Recurring health problems has forced one icon to cancel tour dates while another icon, more than twice her age, has added shows. Lady Gaga, 31, announced she’s canceling her remaining 10 European tour dates, reports GayStarNews.com.
In a statement, Gaga said: “I’m so devastated. I don’t know how to describe it. All I know is that if I don’t do this, I am not standing by the words or meaning of my music. My medical team is supporting the decision for me to recover at home.â€
The “Million Reasons†singer suffers from chronic pain and fibromyalgia — a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body.
Meanwhile, Cher, 71, has announced new dates of her extended engagement at Park Theater at Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and at The Theater at MGM National Harbor in the Washington D.C. area, reports EdgeMediaNetwork.com.
No means no, even if you’re a porn star
Many porn fantasies involve rape scenarios but it’s very different in real life. Andrew Christian model and porn star Topher DiMaggio has been accused of sexual assault by four different men, reports InstinctMagazine.com.
First, a fellow porn star, Tegan Zayne, alleged that DiMaggio raped him the night before they shot a scene together.
Then, two unidentified men spoke about their own individual rape claims. “Dan†said that DiMaggio raped him after a party was over in a bedroom that wasn’t his own. “Dan†claims that he kept asking DiMaggio to stop trying to have sex with him, but he wouldn’t stop and kept saying, “Just don’t worry about it. Don’t worry about it.â€
The third guy who called himself “Bryan†claimed that DiMaggio raped him in the bathroom of a friend’s house, where he pushed him against the wall and his lip allegedly busted open and started bleeding.
A fourth man, Bryan Hawn, has come forward with his own claims of how aggressive DiMaggio was to him during a night out in Los Angeles.
