The end of summer, the start of a new school year, and the beginning of football season all mean it’s time for Galveston’s LGBTQ+ community to celebrate Pride. Events will be held across the island beginning August 25 and continuing through Labor Day Weekend. Â
The festivities begin with the Mister and Miss Pride Galveston Pageant at Island Time on August 25. The island’s newest gay bar (3102 Seawall Blvd.) will host the annual event. For a $50 entry fee, contestants will compete in evening gowns, formal wear, talent, and a question-and-answer session. The winners will receive a booking at Island Time for the beginning of Pride Galveston Weekend.Â
Speaking of the weekend, Pride celebrations will kick into high gear on September 1. The winners of the Mister and Miss Pride Galveston Pageant will be the featured performers at the Haus of Dolls shows at Island Time.Â
Break out the beach blankets, speedos, and tents for the annual Beach Bash at Apffel Beach (1923 Boddecker Dr.) on Saturday, September 2. There will be hot guys, free food and water, and other goodies. Did we mention hot guys? Â
With a nod to the Stonewall Riots of 1969, Island Time will present Stonewall Rebellion Night on Saturday, September 2. The show will feature drag from the 1960s and ’70s starring the Haus of Dolls and the newly crowned Mister and Miss Pride Galveston.Â
Meanwhile, a couple of blocks from Pleasure Pier, Robert’s Lafitte (2501 Avenue Q) marks its 54th year in operation with a Glow Party and Drag Show beginning at 9 p.m. The 4th Annual Pride Pool Party is on Sunday, September 3, also at Robert’s Lafitte. Mister and Miss Pride Galveston will be on hand for special shows all afternoon along with live DJs by the pool, drink specials, and male go-go dancers. Â
Also on Sunday, September 3, Island Time presents Drag Bingo benefitting the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, Gulf Coast Chapter. The show will be hosted by Kymber DeVine.Â
Galveston knows how to throw a party and Pride Galveston 2023 promises not to disappoint.Â
