Move drag shows, hook-ups and vodka aside. There are more important things

Commentary: There is so much more to being gay than watching untalented drag queens (RuPaul’s Drag Race, among other places), finding fresh meat on Grindr or sitting at a bar for hours on end. While you were watching Shuga Cain get eliminated, deservedly so, by the way, a lesbian in the Texas Congress successfully killed a bill that LGBTQ rights advocates said would have perpetuated anti-gay discrimination.

As you were sending and receiving dick pics to your new Mr. Right (now), you may have missed the news about a Houston man who deputies said pretended to be gay on dating apps in order to rob and kill another man.

Or maybe as you were downing a few vodkas while enjoying a night out with friends, you didn’t pay attention to the president calling an openly gay presidential candidate’s masculinity into question, or the Texas Lieutenant Governor using an anti-gay slur on another contender.

There isn’t anything wrong with enjoying life, but not at the expense of staying aware of your surroundings. Have fun but keep abreast of what’s going on in the world. Multi-task! You can do it.

Dallas LGBTQ lawmaker thwarts ‘Save Chick-fil-A’ bill

Texas Republicans got their feathers ruffled when San Antonio banned Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant at the city’s airport. That inspired Fort Worth GOP Rep. Matt Krause to come running as if he had heard a truckload of chicken feed being tossed into the middle of the pen.

House Bill 3172 has alternately been called the “Save Chick-fil-A†bill and the “most extreme anti-LGBT†legislation this year. It would have prohibited the government from taking any “adverse action†against someone for their ‘membership in, affiliation with, or contribution, donation or other support’ to a religious organization,†writes DallasNews.com.

The report adds, “Hours before a key deadline, Rep. Julie Johnson used a legislative maneuver known as a ‘point of order’ to bump the bill from the debate calendar. It’s now effectively dead after a critical legislative deadline passed.

Johnson, D-Carrollton, said it was “an honor to be fighting this fight†and torpedo what she called “a very hurtful piece of legislation.â€

“Hopefully this is the day discrimination against the LGBT community dies in the Texas House,†Johnson said. “I feel great. … I’m going to go celebrate.â€

The bill’s sponsor pledged to find another avenue to pass his hateful bill.

Faux gay man makes court appearance

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a million times: Gay dating apps can be deadly. A Houston man who pretended to be gay in order to rob and kill an actual gay man made a court appearance on April 29, reports KPRCNews.com.

Devonte Garrison, 22, is charged with capital murder after deputies said he robbed, shot, and killed Adrienne Ward on April 19. The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. at the Excelsior on the Park apartments on Ella Boulevard and Greenwell Drive.

Garrison had bragged to friends about the killing saying he “hated homosexuals and that he lured Ward to his apartment under the ruse of hooking up,†prosecutors said.

Donald Trump challenges Pete Buttigieg’s masculinity

Bullies are usually the biggest cowards on the playground and unfortunately we have the biggest coward (and loser) in the White House. The President has made a career out of calling people names, mocking the handicapped, and making threats.

At a recent rally in Florida, Donald Trump took aim at presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg. First he mocked the pronunciation of the gay South Bend, Indiana mayor’s last name before moving on to comments that appeared to question Buttigieg’s masculinity, reports Advocate.com.

“Pick somebody!†he said, referencing the large Democratic field. “We have a young man, Butt-ig-ieg, boot-edge-edge, they say edge–edge.â€

“He’s got a great chance doesn’t he?†Trump said.

“He’ll be great. He’ll be great. Representing us against President Xi of China,†said of Buttigieg, a Naval Reserve veteran who served in Afghanistan.

“I want to be in that room, I want to watch that one,†The implication was clear: Buttigieg isn’t man enough to stand up to other world leaders. You know, because Trump has had so much success facing down the leaders of China, Russia, and North Korea.

Meanwhile in the Lone Star State, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick used an anti-gay slur to refer to Beto O’Rourke. In an interview on Fox News’ (where else) Ingraham Angle, he told host Laura Ingraham that the Democratic presidential candidate is “light in the loafers.â€

He later clarified his statement as just meaning O’Rourke is a lightweight. Yeah, right.
