Houston Roundup: LGBTQ+ Recovery group presents ‘A Midsummer Night’s Drag’

Houston Roundup, a local 501(c)(3) in its 37th year, will stage an original drag production titled A Midsummer Night’s Drag: Feuds on Saturday, August 11, 8 p.m. at The Whitehall Hotel in downtown Houston. The event is open to all and is a fundraiser for the all-volunteer grassroots organization.

“Our idea was to have a fun drag show outside of the usual setting of a bar or club,†says event organizer, Christopher Plata. “As an organization whose work is to help LGBTQ+ individuals suffering from addiction to get and stay sober, we primarily want to show what it looks like to have fun in sobriety.â€

“We are part of a movement to provide a safe, inclusive, and solution-oriented space for LGBTQ+ to recover from addiction, and events like this are a big part of our work,†adds 2018 Houston Roundup Chair Robert “BJ†Johnson adds. “The reality is that while nine percent of the general population faces some form of substance abuse disorder, LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately affected at a rate of about 20 to 30 percent. That amounts to thousands of Houstonians who need a community that can respond to their needs as addicts and as queer people, and we are trying to create that space. Frankly, it is easy for people in recovery to feel left out of the rest of the LGBTQ+ community when so many events center around partying. We want to fill that gap.â€

Local and Texas-based drag queens Angelina DM Trailz, Natalia E. Crawford, Kryztal Vaporz and Huffy Vaporz will join amateur performers from Houston’s LGBTQ+ sober community in the song-and-dance production that will feature performances inspired by legendary feuds like Chaka Khan vs. Tina Turner, Whitney Houston vs. Mariah Carey vs. Celine Dion, Cyndi Lauper vs. Stevie Nicks, Madonna vs. Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson vs. The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, and Britney Spears vs. Christina Aguilera. Tickets are $20 for General Admission and $35 for VIP Admission, which includes refreshments and priority seating.

The mission of Houston Roundup is to provide a welcoming, enriching and empowering annual conference to members of the LGBTQ+ community who are in a program of recovery, as well as sober fun and fellowship events throughout the year. The annual Houston Roundup Conference will take place November 22 through 25, 2018.
