It’s officially that time of year again when the best-dressed in our society come together to put on a show to show the world how extravagantly gorgeous we all are. How the LGBTQIA+ community in Houston and how the majority in East Texas celebrates the Easter holiday may have a few distinctions.

But Spring is officially in season for all and the annual Bunnies on the Bayou celebration that caters to my flamboyant and generally marginalized people is quite an experience to behold.

An annual non-profit event since 1979 at the Sesquicentennial Park in the Downtown Houston District (excluding 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic), this organization stands for and provides a space for anyone who has ever felt ‘other’. Those just looking to make a little noise to come together while enjoying games and great house music dispersed from a well-recognized DJ, this year’s emcee being the one and only Silky Nutmeg Ganache, who is perhaps most famous for competing on Season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The evening having been filled with the crème de la crème and our most celebrated ‘divas’ of Houston, Galveston and beyond, the evening had no shortage of dancing, flowing splashes, a jubilant raucous of affectionate mingling and of course stunning costumes on par with the Easter festivities. It was a night for the ages and a very much needed one in this fearful climate that we are all somewhat languidly acclimating to.

Bunnies on the Bayou and other events that cater to the queer community are a much-needed institution of sorts to not only raise money and awareness to our people in these nefarious times but also to provide a reprieve and sanctuary for those who feel that their rights as a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, pan-sexual and so many others are one reckless “executive order” from being stripped away. Coming together and uniting in moments such as April 20th’s Bunnies is our way of uniting and saying that we are here to stay. Or to quote the late, great and beautiful Harvey Milk: Hope Will Never Be Silent!

And we will all look fabulous while doing so. 🏳️‍🌈
