This event strives to preserve and celebrate Creole history and culture, including its unique fusion of African, French, Native America, and Spanish influences. This is an excellent opportunity for locals to learn about the creole community in Houston and for visitors to experience Bayou City and give back to the vulnerable members of its community.
The Houston Creole Heritage Festival and Mardi Gras Parade partnered with the nonprofit Sweet Hour of Prayer (S.H.O.P.) Ministries Inc. S.H.O.P was founded in 2005 as a radio program that was launched to promote Creole food and music. This partnership supports the community’s students, former military members and the elderly. The funds are raised for scholarships to students entering the field of mortuary science, provide support for veteran groups to help those diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Recently, assistance with home care for seniors in the community has been added.
