There are treasures to be found at under the radar joints that have opened quietly in recent months — places like Dubu Dubu, on Richmond across from Costco. A friend and I recently sampled several dishes.
First up was a complimentary off-the-menu soup that was full of little tofu cubes as well as mushrooms and cabbage in an earthy, smoky broth. It was delicious and I wish it had a name!
Dubu Dubu Bibimbap
Dubu Dubu’s Bibimbap is exemplary. Dubu Dubu’s version is a noodle bowl topped with a variety of seasoned vegetables, beef and a fried egg. It was awash in vibrant colors and textures, and it was scrumptious.
Soondubu Noodles were a joy to dig into. We had our doubts at first, because what we got was a platter of thin wheat noodles. “What’s so special about this?” we wondered. We needn’t have, because this is where the banchan came into play.
In Korea, banchan is a variety of small side dishes that add flavor and spice to the dishes it’s served with. At Dubu Dubu we got kimchi (spicy fermented cabbage), pickled vegetables, cool cucumber and gochujang sauce. Adding these to the noodles gave the dish an explosion of flavor and texture.
Dubu Dubu-Kimchi Pork Stir-Fry
Kimchi Pork Stir Fry was up next, and it’s a delightful fusion of the tangy, spicy notes of kimchi with thinly sliced and marinated pork. Stir-frying made this entrée tender and caramelized. It’s not the most colorful dish, but boy, the flavors were vibrant!
Dubu Dubu Beef Bulgogi
Another star of our meal was the Beef Bulgogi. This is another beloved Korean dish of marinated beef that was both tender and infused with a deep, savory, yet bright flavor.
Service is just getting up to speed. The waiter brought a couple of wrong dishes and didn’t explain what each dish was when it was served. This led to a little confusion, but that didn’t stand in the way of our full enjoyment of the feast.
