It’s always sunny at The Sunrise House

By Jim Ayres

A new breakfast and brunch spot in Montrose, The Sunrise House offers a menu of brunch classics, health-forward dishes and chef-driven cuisine.

Almost windowless, The Sunrise House manages to convey a bright, inviting atmosphere with color and light. There’s a cute sunflower wall for photo ops, and there’s a small patio, as well. I’d recommend it if you’re in a large group.

Service is fun and friendly, and on the day that I visited, several happy tables were enjoying cocktails and over-the-top breakfasts.

You’ll want to dig into their complimentary croissants right away. Then, try the Hangover Burger, which is something I’d usually never order. I did though, and it turned out to be one of the best burgers of any kind I’ve ever had. It’s a half-pound beauty, oozing with perfect medium rare short rib juices and topped with a “sunny” fried egg, provolone and sriracha mayo.

Sunrise Hangover Burger

Nicely fried steak fries elevate this burger even further. Even if you’re not in the mood for a burger, you owe it to yourself to try this one!

Sunrise Continental

For a more classic breakfast spin, The Sunrise Continental is sure to satisfy. Pancakes sprinkled with powdered sugar (100% pure maple syrup on the side) come with two eggs your way, bacon or sausage, as well as grits or potatoes. All these ingredients are top-notch quality, and you’ll taste the difference in every bite.

Sunrise Golden Delights

Not so classic, but still delicious, are The Sunrise House’s deviled eggs, here called Golden Delights. They’re panko-crusted and come to the table with their sumptuous bacon, a lilting green aioli and microgreens. Yes, I could have eaten all of them, but the mood in the restaurant was so vibrant that I happily shared.

If those eggs sound a little bit, oh, healthy, The Sunrise House will satisfy your decadent side with the luxurious Bananas Foster Frenchie. French toast is topped with a flaming banana, rum and cream cheese icing. I could have eaten all that too, and this time I did!

With all that food, you’ll need to wash it down in style. I loved their Sunrise Sangria, where Chardonnay, white peach mango nectar, pineapple and lime juice come together to form a delicious concoction.

There are some interesting flights available too — whether you seek caffeine (Rise & Grind with three espressos), champagne (The Horizon, a trio of assorted mimosas) or wellness (Flower Power, that includes anti-inflammatory, energy and immunity shots might even be better for your hangover than the burger!)

The parking lot is small, but available during the week, as is street parking. During busy times and weekends there’s valet as well.

Be sure and take your wallet with you, perhaps with a backup credit card. The Sunrise House has many things going for it, but “cheap” isn’t one of them. It’s comparable to Snooze and Empire Café, two breakfast-y alternatives in the neighborhood. But give The Sunrise House a try. It’s a great party place to start your day!
