This and That: Summer 2021 Edition

It’s been an oddly rainy summer so far, but that hasn’t stopped me from getting out and about — slowly but surely. And getting delivery when work gets overwhelming.  

I’ve found a new bungalow 

It’s a simple design with room for hundreds! And all it costs me is the price of a meal. It’s Bungalow Heights, a dog friendly all-purpose drinkery and restaurant. It’s always crowded (but with lots of eye candy) and the food, frankly, beats the pants off nearby Presslee’s of which I wrote earlier this year. 

I first met a friend for brunch on a rainy Sunday. Maybe it was the downpour, but two of us gleefully downed a Boudin Breakfast Bowl with scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheese and veggies; a Grilled Ham and Egg Sandwich with Swiss cheese on sourdough; Pulled Bacon Mac and Cheese which is as rich and delicious as it sounds; and biscuits with an assertive peppered bacon sausage gravy. 

But a casual appetizer evening with friends was also memorable. I’m not much of a wings guy but these big ones might sway me. I think it’s the cornmeal breading, whether in Garlic Parmesan, sweet chili, BBQ, hot honey, lemon pepper or Cajun form.  

Cowboy Eggrolls were also a big hit. Imagine fried rolls filled with pulled pork, cheddar cheese and grits. Well, imagine no more! These wonderful (and hefty) rolls can be yours at any visit, any day you like. 

Perry’s is delivery perfection 

Ever feel like splurging on a meal but you’re wearing a T-shirt and shorts â€” and don’t plan on changing? Perry’s has you covered. I’ve found myself like this twice recently. The first time I got a perfectly cooked, buttered and seasoned prime rib eye. Even though it traveled a mile to get to me, the steak looked and tasted as if it were fresh off the grill. 

My second delivery really shined. Perry’s is known for that Famous Pork Chop, and I had to have it. The website claims “this sweet, smoky, sizzling chop is cured, roasted, slow-smoked and caramelized, and served with homemade applesauce.†I can vouch that the delivery version of this iconic piece of meat is every bit as good as that description promises. 

Postino, I love you, but… 

It was another rainy night when I finally visited Postino Montrose in the former Montrose Mining Company. The lighting is soothing, even sexy. Posters from the Mine and its predecessor, Uncle Charlie’s, adorn the walls. The food is excellent (don’t turn your nose up at Hannah’s Field Salad with quinoa and lots of good-for-you bits – it’s tremendous).  

But honey, we’ve got to talk service. Hands down, some of the saddest around. Scattered, tattered and slow. My otherwise flavorful Pesto Chicken Noodle soup should have been served warm. Iced tea shouldn’t take 20 minutes. That night, no one on staff knew what anyone else was doing. Oh, I’ll still return to Postino, but until Montrose can get its service sorted, I’ll be going back to the Heights!
